You dare not close down schools – Mahama tells Education Minister

The former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has warned the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, not to close down schools in the wake of rising COVID-19 cases in the country. The warning comes amidst concerns about the safety of students and teachers in schools, and the possibility of a third wave of the pandemic.

In a statement issued by his office, Mahama cautioned the Minister against taking any decision that could disrupt the education of Ghanaian children. He argued that closing down schools would have a devastating impact on the education sector and the future of the country's youth.

Mahama stated that the government should instead focus on providing the necessary resources and support to schools to ensure that they are safe for both students and teachers. This includes providing adequate personal protective equipment (PPEs), ensuring social distancing in classrooms, and enhancing sanitation measures.

The former President's statement echoes the concerns of many parents, teachers, and education stakeholders, who have called on the government to prioritize the safety of students and teachers in schools. There have been reports of some schools flouting COVID-19 safety protocols, which has led to a spike in cases among students and teachers.

The Minister of Education has, however, reassured Ghanaians that the government is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of students and teachers in schools. He has urged parents and guardians to support the government's efforts by ensuring that their children adhere to the safety protocols both in and outside of school.

The government's decision on whether to close down schools or not will ultimately depend on the prevailing situation in the country. The recent surge in COVID-19 cases has raised concerns about the possibility of a third wave, which could have a devastating impact on the country's health and education sectors.

In conclusion, the safety of students and teachers in schools is paramount, and the government must take all necessary measures to ensure that they are protected from the COVID-19 pandemic. While closing down schools may be a tempting option, it could have serious consequences for the education sector and the future of Ghana's youth.
